For those visitors who are returning for a second time to Russia and who are interested in the art and culture of the 19th century we have a four day programme to the south of Moscow visiting small towns and monasteries connected with some famous Russian names.

Day 1
In the morning drive to Polenovo /110 km
Tour of Vasily Polenov family estate. The Polenovo estate was bought by the artist in 1892 and comprises 17 buildings and a well preserved park.
The main buildings were designed by the artist himself and of interest is the main house where one can see some personal belongings and paintings by the artist and his friends (Korovin, Repin etc.) as well as the Library.
The area is very pretty and particularly in spring and autumn one can appreciate the atmosphere of a 19th century Russian estate.

Day 2
Full day trip to Spasskoye Lutovinovo. (40 km).
Spasskoye Lutovinovo was where the great Russian writer Ivan Turgenev spent much of his childhood and is now the only museum in the country to honour him. It is here that Turgenev worked the novels Fathers and Sons, Noble Nest, Rudin and many others.
The beauty of the countryside is poetically reflected in his novels. Among the frequent guests were Tolstoy, Shepkin and Nekrasov.

Day 3
Am - drive to Kozelsk/Optina Pustyn via Bolhov (240 km)
The history of Russia is inseparably connected with the Russian Church. In Optina Pustyn you will visit one of the oldest monasteries of Russia and centre of pilgrimage. By 1918, when the monastery was closed, it had housed a community of 300 monks. After 70 years of misuse the monastery was reopened in 1987.
