My Recce trip to Kazan, 12-13 December 2009

It was always my dream to visit Kazan, the capital of Tatar Republic – many stories about the “city of several religions” impressed me greatly. And finally I visited Kazan and was totally impressed by its beauty, developed infrastructure and especially so mild and so soft climate! Upon arriving to the city we were taken to one of the 5* hotels located in the very heart of the city just opposite the Kazan Kremlin. First impression was great – blue cloudless sky, amazingly white snow, the sun shining and the towers of famous and major city mosque Kul Sharif are just in front of you! Entering the Kremlin – the word commonly used to indicate the central part of so many Russian cities – I experienced another feeling of excitement and exaltation seeing the Kremlin so different from what we got used to watch. Within walking distance from one another are Governmental residence, Muslim mosque, Orthodox Church and architectural monument – leaning tower Suumbike from which, the legend says, princess Suumbike steeped off unwilling to become the wife of Russian Tzar Ivan IV… It seemed – and really turned out to be so – that ancient and modern, Eastern and Western world meets there.
Kazan impresses the tourists not only by its architectural and historical background but also by the sphere of entertainment. There all the year round you may visit one of the biggest aqua parks in Russia, start a cruise along Volga River or feed and ride horses at the local hippodrome. For those wishing to deep into the orthodox World of Russia the most esteemed and beloved icon of Our Lady of Kazan and the miracle-making icon of Our Lady of Georgia – could be seen here, in the Church of Exaltation of the Cross and in the Raif Monastery. On the way to the Monastery which is located 30 km from Kazan the impressive private house of “12 religions” is located – the owner of this country side building just wanted to make the unusual bright and impressive image of his house having built it uniting twelve religions of the world. Wish to know what religions are they? Welcome to Kazan!

Everything there once again proves the fact of how friendly, open-hearted and hospitable the local people are! To try national sweets “Chak-chak”, to meet Muslims and orthodox people living peacefully together or just to enjoy the beauty of the region – you are welcome to Kazan and its surrounding area all the year round!
