The hightlights include the Kremlin with several medieval structures and Spasso-Prilutsky monastery (founded in 1371), one of the most significant architectural ensembles of the North.

Kirillov
125 km from the city is the famous Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, founded in the 14th century by monk Kirill. Occupying the area of 12 hectares, it is one of the biggest monasteries in Russia. In the past it was a place for political exiles - Rostovskiys, Mstislavskys, Belskys princes. Now it is a museum-preserve with architectural monuments of 15-19th centuries, rich collection of Russian applied art and crafts items. Part of the monastery is given to operating John monastery. 30 km of it - is another monastery - Ferapontov, founded by monk Ferapont in 1398. The Cathedral of Nativity of a Virgin (1490) is the 2nd stone cathedral built in the north of Russia. It's walls are covered with the frescoes of the famous Dionysius that have been fantastically well preserved till present day.

Kargopol
Kargopol (1146) is a small town with variety of unique stone churches, managed to stay untouched by revolutionary changes in the country. The place is really a remote one, as there is no railway station passing through it. The place is famous for traditional people's crafts. Native people are excellent in producing festive toys, birch bark items, wonderful wood carved boxes. Lyadiny and Oshevensk, as well as other northern villages impress the visitors by unusual tranquility and the beauty of the wooden churches and houses of the 17th century survived till present days. Accommodation - either in "Kargopolochka" hotel having 4 rooms only with shower and toilet or homestay.
Kizhi
The famous island of Kizhi is situated near the edge of lake Onega. One can reach it by hydrofoil from Petrozavodsk, the city located 450 km north from Saint Petersburg. On the island one can admire the fantastic collection of peasant architecture samples - houses, barns, watermill, windmill. The most known is Transfiguration Church, built in 1714 entirely of wood, without the use of nail. It has got 22 cupolas that rise up high in 5 tiers. This is an excellent opportunity for 1 day tour.
