Ferry between Helsinki and St Petersburg - "Princess Maria"

The ferry is a pilot project supported by the mayor of the city launched in April this year. The main idea of it is to provide the the guests with cheap way of gettting to to the Northern capital of Russia (the cost of the ticket is ˆ65-80) as well as - more important - entry to the country without visa for 72 hours.

The latter became possible due changes in the Russian law on entry/exit made last year and according to the the city council forecast this will contribute to increase of visitors volume to the city turning St Petersburg into one the 5 biggest ports in Europe.

PUBLICA cafe and restaurant

Tasty, fast and inexpensive - that's the idea, which followed a restaurateur Edward Mouradian, opening a new cafe on Vladimirsky prospect just in a couple minutes walk from Nevsky prospect and Radisson SAS hotel.

There are two floors; the restaurant is on the first floor and sandwich bistro on the ground floor. On the first floor, everything happens in a more measured rhythm. The menu is mainly fish, of course, fresh or frozen by shock in Japan or directly off the coast of Chile. The most expensive item of the menu is marble beef steak.

The interior is a mixture of baroque stucco ceiling and contemporary minimalistic-fusion style. Chandelier matches well the ceiling and big footlights (you are in the same house with the theatre) together with big white-and-black photos on the walls create unforgettable atmosphere. There are no curtains on big windows and you feel life of the busy central street with its historical houses on the other side. It is one of the advantages of the restaurant as in St.Petersburg many restaurants are in the basements of the houses. Very friendly atmosphere and service and superb food add to unforgettable impression from the restaurant and most visitors come back again and again. Capacity of the restaurant is 38 pax (usual set up, separate tables) and up to 70 pax at the long tables.

PIOTR KONCHALOVSKY
To the evolution of the Russian Avant-garde

The exhibition of the famous Russian painter Piotr Konchalovsky (1876 - 1956) held in Russian museum in May-June includes nearly 120 works provided by different museums of Russia as well as private collectors. Graduate of the Academy of Arts, St Petersburg in 1899 the painter visited France in 1908 and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, Paris. Influenced by the French masters Konchalovsky became a founder-member of the avant-garde exhibiting society the "JACK OF DIAMONDS"

The fist scandalous exhibition opened in Moscow in December 1910. Subsequently the title was adopted by a newly formed artistic society in Moscow. Soon thereafter, this group became the largest and one of the most significant exhibition societies of the early Russian avant-garde. Their works demonstrate the artists' interest in the developing of the new styles (Russian Primitivism, Russian Cezanneism, Moscow School of Neo-Primitivism) that emerged around their first exhibition as a result of their integrating folk art of the provinces in the artworks.
