Exhibition devoted to Sergei Diaghilev in St Petersburg

2009 is the centenary of the death of Sergei Diaghilev and to celebrate the occasion the Russian Museum in St Petersburg is hosting an exhibition of the Ballet Russes from 15 October 2009 - 10 March 2010.

St Petersburg The Ballets Russes was an itinerant ballet company which flourished under the directorship of Sergei Diaghilev between 1909 and 1929. Based in Paris they also toured abroad to England, the U.S.A. and Spain. Many of the company's dancers originated from the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg, but after the Russian revolution of 1917, the large population of Russians in Paris were a source of additional members. The company's productions, which combined new dance, art and music, created a huge sensation around the world, altering the course of musical history, bringing many significant visual artists into the public eye and completely reinvigorating the art of performing dance. The Ballets Russes was one of the most influential theatre companies of the twentieth century, in part because of its ground-breaking artistic collaboration among contemporary choreographers, composers, artists, and dancers.
