Yelagin palacelies on an island of the River Neva in the north of St Petersburg. Yelagin Island was bought from Count Gregory Orlov by Tsar Alexander who commissioned the architect Carlo Rossi to rebuild Count Ivan Elagin's mansion for the widowed empress Maria Feodorovna.
Rossi carried out his first large commission brilliantly and created a beautiful mansion, surrounded by pavilions set in a natural landscape. Today it is a tranquil haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city and surrounded by gardens with wild flowers and trees and views onto the river.
