Gousyatnikoff - new restaurant by Arkady Novikov

Novikov's new restaurant "Gusyatnikoff " housed in 19th century mansion aims for class in every direction. Upon entering, you may think you have stumbled into a nobleman's country house, with the expensive furniture, specially imported and designed by Andrew Martins. On the other hand, the grandeur is not imposing and the space somehow feels lived in and comfortable. There are also billiards and poker rooms downstairs but this feature does not detract from the restaurant's food.

Novikov's connections in the industry mean that the ingredients are of the highest quality possible in Russia and allow the chefs to create traditional Russian dishes without having to smother them in dill. Duck is the specialty at Gusyatnikoff, with the duck leg (ˆ15) and the duck meat kotletti Gusyatnikoff (ˆ25) coming highly recommended. With most restaurants opting for plasma screens and techno, the relaxed atmosphere of Gusyatnikoff is something to be savored.

Alexandra Exter - Goddes of avant-garde

It is impossible to imagine the Russian art of the early 20th century without Alexandra Exter. This Byelorussian-born artist who lived in Kiev, Moscow, Toscana and Paris, was a bright star of the Russian avant-garde. She created Cubo-Futurism and being friends with Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Guillame Apollinaire, Alexandra Exter played a vital role in familirizing Russian viewers with latest developments of Parisian avant-garde.

After her death in 1949 she was largely forgotten and only exhibitions held in 1970s in Europe and USA reminded the world about this brilliant artist.

The current exhibition at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art held June 01 - August 22 is actually Exter's first retrospective and presents collections of several museums of Moscow, St Petersburg and Kiev.

Torzhok - charm of Russsian province

Torzhok, a small town in Tverskaya region (between Moscow and St Petersburg, 4 hour train trip from Moscow) is considered a model of Russian architectural art of the 18-19th centuries. The most amazing thing is that Torzhok has preserved its architecture almost untouched. Over 30 churches, cathedrals and monasteries including Boris and Gleb monastery (founded in 1038) have been preserved here.

The town was well-known in Russia as a centre of gold embroidery of the country even before the Mongolian invasion of the 12th century. Embroidery was used by tsars, boyars and senior clergy for decorating clothes, objects of interior designs and for cult purposes. In order to embroider the porphyra (a purple gown of the monarch) for his coronation ceremony, Alexander II commanded that 30 of the best needlewomen be brought from here to St. Petersburg. A gold embroidery factory still operates in the town. It was there that they made beautiful costumes for War and Peace and Anna Karenina films. Now they embrioder clothes, military banners, Russian coat-of-arms, glasses and cosmetic cases and other objects.

Many outstanding personalities of the past visited Torzhok, among them - Tolsoty, Gogol. The great poet Alexander Pushkin stayed there more than 20 times. He usually stayed in Pozharsky Inn. In one of the letters Pushkin wrote about the inn and highly praised the cutlets that he ate there. During the 19th century, they were enormously popular in Russia. Today Pozharsky cutlets together with Borsch , Olivie salad and Beefstroganoff are the main Russian cuisine specialities.
