Rostov-on-Don
Founded in 1749 by decree of empress Elisabeth II, it is the capital of the Don region and is named after the Saint Dmitry Rostovsky fortress, built to defend the south of Russia. Its situation on the border of Europe and Russia has done much to influence its culture and architecture, resulting in a classical European style mixed with eastern luxury. Today its charm lies in the river, the embankment, old side-streets with merchants’ mansions, the public garden in the main square and the left bank of the Don with its small cosy cafes and exotic restaurants.
After lunch you will leave the city and visit the small village of Semikarakorsk famous for its porcelain factory. We will see how experts model the teapots, dishes, cups and souvenirs, how the artists paint luxurious patterns and draw the glaze. You will see the huge stove where the porcelain is fired and at the end of the excursion you will have an opportunity to decorate a plate by yourself to take home.

Taganrog
Founded in 1768 by Peter the Great on the shore of Taganrog Bay as a fortress, it was also the first Russian Naval harbour as the country fought for the security of its southern frontiers and its requirement for an outlet to the Black Sea. Today Taganrog is famous, to Russians at least, as the birthplace of the writer Anton Chekhov. Here you will visit the house where he was born which preserves the atmosphere of his family’s modest life; his father’s shop museum, where the writer spent his boyhood and youth and “The Writer and The Motherland”, a literary and memorial exhibition about his biographical and creative connections to his town.
Additionally there is the Taganrog drama theatre, built by Italian architects, and some lovely old merchant’s houses, many of which are now museums.

Azov
Azov is a town-fortress and during its 900 year history it has witnessed Venetian merchants, the Tatar-Mongolian horde, Turkish janissaries, various famous sieges by Don Cossacks and campaigns of Peter the Great which opened an entrance to the Azov Sea and thus to the Black Sea for Russia.
The town has some interesting monuments of military engineering including the fortress walls, the Alexeev gates and a diorama depicting the attack of the Azov Turkish fortress by Peter the Great’s troops in 1767. You will also visit The Museum of Regional Study that comprises more than 240,000 exhibits, including the unique Trogont elephant skeleton. |
Starocherkassk
the most interesting of all the Don Cossack stanitsa or settlements. Called Cherkassk in the past, the first reference to the town is in 1539 and by 1570 it had become the capital of the Don Cossacks. It was here that Stepan Razin called on the Cossacks to attack Moscow and Kondrat Bulavin began his uprising. On 18th August 1696 it produced the first Russian firework display to celebrate the capture of Azov.
|
The keeper of Cossack history and memorabilia is the Starocherkassk Reserve Museum, the largest museum in the South of Russia and now a UNESCO heritage site. The museum includes the whole territory of the former town of Cherkassk with over 100 monuments of architecture.
St. Peter and Paul's Church, Kondrat Bulavin's House, a trading house of the Zhuchenkov Cossacks, the belfry, the Cathedral of Resurrection with its outstanding example of wood carving and a unique golden, five-tiered iconostasis. In Maidan, the main square of Starocherkassk, you will see the master carver Nikola and then afterwards visit an Ataman estate with exhibitions of the old town of Cherkassk and the culture and everyday life of the Don Cossack.
